The Ottawa Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (OPFFA) employs a committee of Shop Stewards who are appointed by the President of the OPFFA. Each workplace in the Ottawa Fire Service where bargaining unit members are assigned has an appointed Shop Steward. Using their knowledge of the Collective Agreement, Constitution, employer policies and procedures, and various Local, Provincial, and Federal legislation, Shop Stewards are available to ensure worker’s rights are protected and respected.
Shop Stewards also serve a critical role as the face of the Association in the workplace and the main point of contact between rank-and-file members and their elected Officers and Executive Board. By maintaining this vital communication link, they ensure that Association leadership understands the needs of its membership and that all members of the OPFFA have a voice.
