What is Wellness?

Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis in order to attain better physical and mental health outcomes. Wellness is more than just being free from illness: it is a process of change and growth so that instead of just surviving, you’re thriving.

What is the WFI?

In 1996, the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) began a partnership focused on the Health & Wellness of North America’s firefighters. The comprehensive Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI) was created to improve the quality of life of all uniformed personnel.

Firefighter Wellness Matters

Due to extreme physical and emotional exposures at work, firefighters need to be extra focused on their wellness.  An increased attention to wellness will allow them to live a higher quality life, both at work and home. In order to subdue stress, reduce illness, and ensure positive moments in your life, firefighters should strive to achieve optimal wellness – from Recruit school to retirement and beyond!

The WFI Can Help

The WFI focusses on health and wellness information and programming that will allow firefighters to achieve their own version of optimal wellness. You can apply a wellness approach towards your environment, community, career, belief systems, physical activities, self care, healthy eating, self esteem, and creative activities. Take control of your wellness!
